The Vis Award

This August, at the 2008 annual convention of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, Dr. Jacob Schor was both surprised and honored by his colleagues as the first recipient of the Vis Award. The creation of this award was inspired by the life of Bill Mitchell, ND, who was a mentor and inspiration to many naturopathic doctors currently in practice. Dr. Mitchell passed away in 2007, and this award was created to honor those naturopathic doctors who have exhibited similar characteristics of service to their patients and commitment to living and practicing naturopathic medicine in accordance to what is called the “Vis Medicatrix Naturae”, or healing force of nature.

The Vis Medicatrix Naturae, or Vis, is one of the fundamental principles that guides and distinguishes the practice of naturopathic medicine. The Vis is the belief that every living being contains a “life force”. When this force is given proper building blocks and freed from obstacles, each being will come to a state of ideal health and balance. Each naturopathic doctor strives in his or her practice to help each system of the body receive that ideal “nutrition,” whether it is in the form of vitamins, herbs, emotional wellbeing, or even adequate sleep. It is the highest goal of each naturopathic doctor to find this balance for each patient and the community in which they live.

Dr. Schor was selected as the first recipient of this award for embodying this goal throughout his 17 years of practice as a naturopathic doctor in the state of Colorado. In addition to maintaining a private practice focused on cancer treatment, he is also a Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncologists, writes frequently about naturopathic medicine for several journals, and has been actively involved in the state naturopathic association, the Colorado Association of Naturopathic Physicians, since moving here in 1991. He has as worked tirelessly to promote the safe practice of naturopathic medicine in Colorado for the past 17 years, overseeing our countless efforts to pass legislation to regulate the practice. Additionally, he has served as a great resource and mentor to his colleagues through his extensive research and knowledge base. Dr. Schor has continually worked throughout his career as a naturopathic doctor, to improve the health and wellbeing of his patients,
his colleagues, and his community.
