Building a Resilient Gut: Why Lasting Health Is About More Than Digestion
Over the past month, we’ve taken a journey through one of the most remarkable systems in the human body.
We began by exploring the digestive tract as the place where the outside world meets the inside of the body. Every meal, every sip of water, every medication, and every microorganism first encounters the lining of the gastrointestinal tract before becoming part of our internal environment.
From there, we explored the incredible communication network connecting the gut with the brain, immune system, hormones, and microbiome. We saw that digestion is not an isolated event but an ongoing conversation that influences nearly every aspect of health.
Last week, we shifted our attention to digestive symptoms themselves. Rather than viewing bloating, reflux, constipation, or diarrhea as diagnoses, we explored how they often represent clues that help us understand where relationships within the digestive ecosystem may have changed.
This week, I’d like to end our series by stepping back even farther. Instead of asking how to fix digestive symptoms, let’s ask a different question.
What does a healthy digestive ecosystem actually look like?
I believe that question changes everything.
We Tend to Think About Health Backwards
One of the most common patterns I see in practice is that people begin thinking about their health only after symptoms appear.
That makes perfect sense. Pain, fatigue, digestive discomfort – all get our attention. Symptoms are often what motivate us to schedule an appointment, change our habits, or begin asking questions. But if we only focus on symptoms, it’s easy to overlook everything the body has been doing well for years beforehand.
Think about how much work your digestive system performs every single day. Among it’s tasks:
- Recognizes food.
- Coordinates muscles.
- Releases digestive enzymes.
- Produces stomach acid.
- Regulates hormone release.
- Communicates with the nervous system.
- Educates the immune system.
- Supports trillions of microorganisms.
- Absorbs nutrients.
- Repairs the intestinal lining.
- Maintains a selective barrier between the outside world and the bloodstream.
All of that happens quietly, without conscious effort or applause. In many ways, healthy physiology is almost invisible. We notice it most when it changes. That’s understandable, but I think one of the greatest gifts of studying physiology is that it teaches us to appreciate what the body is accomplishing long before symptoms appear.
Resilience Is Different From Perfection
When people hear the phrase “gut health,” they often imagine a digestive system that never experiences discomfort.
- Perfect digestion.
- Perfect bowel movements.
- Perfect microbiome results.
- Perfect food tolerance.
But biology doesn’t work that way. In nature, healthy ecosystems aren’t defined by the absence of challenges. Forests experience storms. Grasslands experience drought. Coral reefs experience seasonal changes. The organisms living within those ecosystems are constantly adapting to changing conditions. Their health isn’t determined by whether challenges occur. It’s determined by how well they recover afterward.
The digestive tract behaves much the same way. There will be vacations filled with unfamiliar foods. There will be birthdays, holidays, and celebrations. There may be courses of antibiotics when they’re medically necessary. Periods of poor sleep. Unexpected illness. Stressful seasons of life. None of those experiences automatically damage a healthy digestive ecosystem beyond repair. In fact, one of the defining characteristics of living systems is their remarkable ability to adapt. That’s what resilience means, not avoiding every challenge. Responding effectively when challenges arise.
The Digestive Ecosystem Is Always Changing
One of the reasons I like describing the gut as an ecosystem is because ecosystems are never static. A forest in spring looks very different from that same forest in autumn. New plants emerge, leaves fall, wildlife changes, rainfall varies. The ecosystem is constantly responding to its environment while maintaining an overall sense of balance.
Our digestive system behaves similarly. The microbiome changes throughout our lives. Infancy. Childhood. Pregnancy. Adulthood. Older age. Travel introduces new foods and new microbes. Illness changes how we eat. Medications influence the intestinal environment. Even the seasons affect dietary patterns and microbial diversity.
Sometimes these changes are temporary. Sometimes they persist. The important point is that change itself is not evidence that something is wrong. In fact, healthy adaptation is one of the defining characteristics of life. The body isn’t trying to remain exactly the same forever, it’s trying to remain healthy while continuously responding to an ever-changing world.
Cultivating an Ecosystem Instead of Controlling One
I think this shift in perspective has become one of the most meaningful lessons in my own practice. Many patients arrive hoping to find the one food they should eliminate, or the one supplement they should take, or the one laboratory result that explains everything.
Occasionally, medicine is that straightforward but very often, health develops through countless small influences that accumulate over time.
Imagine tending a garden. You can’t force tomatoes to grow, just like you can’t command flowers to bloom. What you can do is create the conditions that make healthy growth more likely. You prepare the soil, provide water, allow adequate sunlight, protect the plants when needed, and remove weeds that compete for resources. Then you allow nature to do what it was designed to do.
I think the human body deserves much the same respect. We can’t command perfect health but we can create conditions that support the remarkable processes already taking place within us. That distinction may seem subtle, but I believe it changes the entire way we think about medicine. Instead of trying to control every aspect of the body, we begin asking,
“What does this system need in order to function well?”
That’s a very different question. And in my experience, it often leads to better conversations and better long-term decisions.
Health Is Built Through Ordinary Choices
One of the most encouraging aspects of digestive physiology is that resilience rarely depends on dramatic interventions.
It develops gradually; meal by meal, sleep by sleep, walk by walk. The foods we choose most often, the quality of our slumber, regular physical activity, stress management, hydration, time spent outdoors, meaningful relationships, moments of recovery.
Each may seem relatively small on its own but together, they create the environment in which the digestive ecosystem lives. This is one of the reasons I encourage patients not to underestimate ordinary habits. Extraordinary health is often built through remarkably ordinary choices, practiced consistently over time. That may not be the most exciting message on social media, but it is one of the most hopeful. Because it reminds us that supporting our health doesn’t always require dramatic change. Sometimes it begins with simply caring well for the systems that have been caring for us all along.
What Does a Healthy Ecosystem Need?
If we think of the digestive tract as a living ecosystem rather than a machine, the next question becomes surprisingly straightforward. What helps healthy ecosystems thrive?
Interestingly, the answer isn’t usually one single intervention. Healthy ecosystems are supported by consistent conditions that allow many different organisms and processes to work together over time.
The digestive tract is no different. While every person is unique, there are several foundational habits that consistently support digestive health because they improve the environment in which the digestive ecosystem functions.
Diversity Feeds More Than You
One of the most consistent findings in microbiome research is that diversity matters. A diverse microbiome is generally associated with greater resilience and a broader range of metabolic capabilities. While scientists continue to learn about the roles of individual bacterial species, one principle has remained remarkably consistent: microbial communities tend to thrive when they’re exposed to a wide variety of plant fibers and naturally occurring food compounds. That’s one reason I encourage patients to think beyond simply eating “healthy.” Instead, ask yourself:
How much variety am I eating?
A colorful plate often provides more than visual appeal. Different fruits, vegetables, legumes, herbs, spices, nuts, seeds, and whole grains contain unique fibers and polyphenols that nourish different members of the microbial community. No single food feeds every organism.
Just as a forest depends on biodiversity, the microbiome benefits from dietary diversity. Rather than focusing on foods to eliminate, I often encourage patients to begin by asking what they can thoughtfully add. Sometimes expanding variety is just as powerful as removing what isn’t serving us well. One of my favorite ideas – eat at least 10 colors per day (and different shades of the same color count toward your 10).
Fiber Is More Than Roughage
Fiber has earned a reputation for supporting regular bowel movements, but its role extends far beyond motility. Many forms of dietary fiber become nourishment for the microorganisms living within the colon. As those microbes ferment fiber, they produce compounds known as short-chain fatty acids, including butyrate, acetate, and propionate. These molecules help nourish the cells lining the colon, contribute to maintenance of the intestinal barrier, and participate in immune and metabolic signaling throughout the body.
That doesn’t mean everyone should suddenly double their fiber intake overnight. For some individuals, particularly those experiencing active digestive symptoms, introducing fiber too quickly may temporarily increase discomfort. Like many aspects of physiology, supporting the gut often works best when changes are gradual, individualized, and sustainable.
My fiber goal: 35g daily.
Fermented Foods and Probiotics: Similar Goals, Different Tools
People often ask whether they should take a probiotic. My answer is almost always the same.
It depends.
Not because probiotics aren’t useful, but because “probiotic” isn’t one thing. Different strains perform different functions. Different patients have different needs. Different clinical situations call for different approaches.
Fermented foods offer another way to introduce beneficial microorganisms and microbial metabolites into the diet, and for many people they can be a wonderful addition when tolerated. Foods such as yogurt with live cultures, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, and other traditionally fermented foods may help increase dietary diversity while introducing naturally occurring microbes.
That doesn’t mean everyone needs every fermented food, and it certainly doesn’t mean they replace personalized medical care. Like every other recommendation we’ve discussed this month, the question isn’t whether a food is universally “good.” It’s whether it’s supportive for the individual in front of us.
The Nervous System Is Part of Digestion
One of the most important lessons from this month’s series is that digestion doesn’t begin when food reaches the stomach. It begins long before the first bite.
The thought of food. The sight of it.. Its aroma. The anticipation of a meal. All activate what’s known as the cephalic phase of digestion, preparing the body for the work ahead.
The opposite is true as well. When we’re rushing through lunch at our desk, eating while answering emails, or grabbing a quick meal between meetings, digestion often occurs in a very different physiologic environment.
That doesn’t mean every meal needs to be slow and perfectly mindful. Life is busy. But whenever possible, creating a few moments to slow down before eating can help support the remarkable communication already taking place between the brain and the digestive tract. Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do isn’t changing what we eat. It’s changing how we eat.
Movement Helps More Than Our Muscles
Physical activity is often discussed in the context of cardiovascular health or weight management, but regular movement also supports digestive function. Walking after meals, resistance training, yoga, and other forms of enjoyable movement can influence motility, metabolic health, stress regulation, and overall well-being.
Notice that I didn’t prescribe one perfect exercise routine. That’s intentional. The best form of movement is often the one you genuinely enjoy enough to practice consistently. Resilience develops through repetition, not perfection.
Sleep Is When Restoration Happens
During sleep, the body performs countless restorative processes. Hormonal regulation continues. Immune activity changes. Tissue repair occurs. The nervous system recalibrates. The digestive system is no exception.
Poor sleep has been associated with changes in the microbiome, appetite regulation, inflammation, glucose metabolism, and gastrointestinal function. While improving sleep isn’t always simple, it’s one of the highest-impact ways we can support not only digestive health but nearly every other system we’ve discussed throughout this year’s educational series. Sometimes the most powerful intervention isn’t found in a supplement bottle. Sometimes it’s an earlier bedtime.
A clinical pearl to get you on the road to better (more) sleep: It’s really hard for a body to adjust to a bedtime that is suddenly 2 hours earlier than it has been. Start by upping your bedtime in 15 minute increments every week. That will make the shift more adaptable and easier to obtain!
The Goal Is Stewardship, Not Perfection
One of the greatest challenges in modern health culture is the pressure to do everything perfectly.
- Eat perfectly.
- Sleep perfectly.
- Exercise perfectly.
- Choose the perfect supplement.
- Follow the perfect protocol.
The human body has never required perfection to remain healthy. It has always required adaptability. Some days will include home-cooked meals. Others will include airport food. Some weeks will feel calm. Others will be stressful. Some seasons of life leave abundant time for self-care. Others demand that we simply do our best.
Healthy ecosystems aren’t built by occasional perfection. They’re shaped by consistent stewardship over time. That’s encouraging because it reminds us that each meal, each night of sleep, each walk around the neighborhood, and each thoughtful choice becomes another opportunity to support the remarkable ecosystem within us.
The Body Is Always Trying to Move Toward Health
One of the greatest privileges of practicing medicine is having a front-row seat to the remarkable adaptability of the human body. Every day, I meet patients whose bodies have carried them through years of stress, infections, pregnancies, surgeries, medications, environmental exposures, demanding careers, and countless other challenges. Despite all of that, their bodies continue trying to heal.
The immune system continues surveying for threats. The digestive tract continues repairing its lining. The microbiome continues adapting to changing foods and environments. The nervous system continues learning from every experience. That doesn’t mean symptoms aren’t real. Nor does it mean every condition resolves on its own. But I think it’s important to remember that the body is not working against us. More often than not, it’s working incredibly hard for us. Sometimes it simply needs additional support. Sometimes it needs more information. Sometimes it needs time. And sometimes it needs medical intervention. Recognizing that distinction changes the conversation from one of frustration to one of partnership.
Stewardship Is More Powerful Than Control
If there’s one idea I hope stays with you after this month’s series, it’s this: The goal isn’t to control every aspect of your health. It’s to care well for the systems that have been caring for you your entire life. That perspective changes the way we think about nutrition.
Instead of searching for the perfect diet, we begin asking how we can consistently nourish our digestive ecosystem. It changes the way we think about movement.
Instead of exercising only to burn calories, we begin appreciating how movement supports circulation, digestion, metabolism, and resilience. It changes the way we think about sleep.
Instead of seeing it as unproductive time, we recognize it as one of the body’s most active periods of repair and restoration.
Even stress begins to look different. The goal isn’t eliminating every stressful experience. It’s helping the body recover well afterward.
Stewardship is rarely dramatic. It’s found in ordinary choices repeated consistently over months and years. A colorful meal. A walk after dinner. A full night’s sleep. Time spent outdoors. Meaningful relationships. Moments of laughter. A sweet snuggle with your partner, dog, or little one. Preparing food at home when we can. Seeking medical care when we need it.
None of these choices are particularly glamorous. Yet together they create an internal environment where health is more likely to flourish.
A Different Way to Think About Gut Health
When people ask me what the “best thing” is for gut health, they’re often expecting the name of a supplement or a specific dietary strategy. My answer is usually much less exciting. The best thing you can do is consistently create an environment where your digestive system has what it needs to do the job it was designed to do.
Sometimes that means eating more plant diversity. Sometimes it means slowing down enough to enjoy a meal instead of eating while rushing between meetings. Sometimes it means improving sleep. Sometimes it means identifying and treating an underlying medical condition. Sometimes it means using medications appropriately. Sometimes it means targeted testing that helps us better understand what’s happening within the digestive ecosystem. If I’m being honest, for most people, it means more than a few of those things.
There is no single intervention that works for every person because every person brings a different history, different genetics, different environment, different microbiome, and different life experiences to the table. Personalized medicine isn’t about making healthcare more complicated. It’s about recognizing that every ecosystem is unique.
The Questions I Hope You’ll Continue Asking
As this series comes to a close, I hope you’ll leave with a different set of questions than the ones you started with. Instead of asking,
“What’s the one thing that’s wrong with my gut?”
Perhaps you’ll ask,
“What is my body trying to communicate?”
Instead of,
“What’s the best supplement?”
Perhaps you’ll ask,
“What conditions would help this system function more effectively?”
Instead of,
“How do I make my gut perfect?”
Perhaps you’ll ask,
“How do I become a good steward of my health?”
Those questions don’t always produce quick answers. But they often lead to better ones.
Bringing the Series Together
When we began this month, we explored the gut as the place where the outside world meets the inside of the body. From there, we discovered that it is one of the body’s greatest communication networks. Then we learned that symptoms often represent changes in relationships within that digestive ecosystem rather than isolated problems waiting to be fixed. Now we’ve arrived at the final lesson.
Healthy ecosystems aren’t built through perfection. They’re built through diversity, communication, adaptation, recovery, and thoughtful stewardship over time. The remarkable thing is that this principle doesn’t apply only to the digestive system. It applies to nearly every aspect of human physiology.
- The immune system.
- The nervous system.
- Our hormones.
- Our metabolism.
- Even healthy aging.
Living systems remain healthy not because nothing ever challenges them, but because they continue adapting to those challenges throughout life. Perhaps that’s one of the most hopeful lessons physiology has to offer. Our bodies are not static; they’re living, learning, adaptive systems. And while we can’t control everything that happens to us, we can influence the conditions in which those systems operate.
To me, that’s one of the most empowering ways to think about medicine. Not as the pursuit of perfection. But as the lifelong practice of thoughtful stewardship.
