Recovery Is Where Resilience Is Built
We Live in a Culture That Celebrates Stress
One of the most interesting things I’ve noticed over the years is that almost everyone understands the importance of exercise.
Most people understand that muscles become stronger after they’re challenged. They know that a workout creates microscopic damage within muscle fibers, and that over the next day or two those tissues repair themselves, becoming stronger and more resilient than before.
Very few people would expect to become stronger by lifting the same weight every day without allowing time for recovery. Yet we often expect the rest of the body to function that way.
We celebrate long work hours, packed calendars, skipped meals, poor sleep, and constant productivity as though resilience is simply the ability to tolerate increasingly higher levels of stress. We wear busyness almost like a badge of honor. When someone asks how we’re doing, many of us instinctively reply, “Busy,” as though that alone has become a measure of success.
I understand why. Life is demanding.
Many of us are raising children while caring for aging parents. We’re managing careers, relationships, financial responsibilities, household responsibilities, community commitments, and the endless stream of emails and notifications that seem determined to convince us we’re never quite caught up. Stress itself is not unusual. In many ways, it is unavoidable. The problem is not that we experience stress; the problem is that many of us have forgotten that biology was never designed for stress to be continuous.
The human body evolved to respond remarkably well to short periods of challenge. Thousands of years ago, those challenges might have included escaping a predator, finding food during periods of scarcity, surviving harsh weather, or recovering from an injury. Each of those situations required a rapid physiological response that increased heart rate, elevated blood sugar, sharpened mental focus, redirected blood flow toward skeletal muscle, and temporarily shifted resources away from processes that were less immediately necessary for survival.
Those responses were life-saving. Just as importantly, they were temporary. Eventually the threat ended; the nervous system settled; hormones normalized; digestion resumed; tissues repaired; the immune system recalibrated; recovery began. That final step is the one I think modern life often overlooks. Our physiology was never designed to remain in survival mode indefinitely.
Adaptation Happens During Recovery
One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter in practice is the belief that improvement happens during the stressful event itself. In reality, stress creates the opportunity for adaptation. Recovery is where adaptation actually occurs. Exercise provides an excellent example.
When you lift weights, you’re not becoming stronger while the weight is in your hands. During the workout, muscle fibers experience mechanical stress and microscopic injury. Energy stores become depleted. Inflammatory signals are activated, immune cells begin coordinating tissue repair, and protein synthesis increases.
The workout is the stimulus. The workout is not the adaptation. The adaptation occurs afterward, during the hours and days that follow, assuming the body has adequate protein, sufficient sleep, appropriate nutrients, and enough recovery to complete the repair process.¹
Without those ingredients, the same workout that should have made someone stronger simply becomes another stressor the body has not yet recovered from.
The immune system functions in remarkably similar ways. Every infection represents a challenge. Every vaccine represents a “carefully” “controlled” challenge. Even everyday interactions with the environment require continuous immune decision-making. The body is constantly evaluating bacteria, viruses, fungi, food proteins, environmental particles, and countless other substances while deciding which deserve a response and which should be peacefully tolerated. That process requires energy. It requires communication. It requires nutrients. And perhaps most importantly, it requires recovery. One of the greatest strengths of the immune system is not simply its ability to respond. It is its ability to learn.
After encountering a virus, specialized immune cells develop memory that allows them to recognize that same pathogen much more efficiently in the future. This remarkable process forms the basis of long-term immune protection and demonstrates that a healthy immune system is not static. It is continuously adapting to the world around it.²
Learning, however, requires time. Just as students cannot absorb new information without opportunities to consolidate what they’ve learned, the immune system also requires periods during which it can process, regulate, and prepare for the next challenge.
Recovery Is Not the Same as Rest
One of the reasons I think recovery has become so misunderstood is because we often use the words rest and recovery as though they mean the same thing. They don’t. Rest simply means reducing activity. Recovery means creating the conditions that allow physiology to repair itself. Those conditions vary from person to person.
For one individual, recovery may mean prioritizing eight hours of uninterrupted sleep after several demanding workdays. For another, it may mean eating enough protein to repair muscle after strength training. Sometimes recovery involves spending an afternoon hiking with family because meaningful social connection and time in nature help calm an overactive nervous system. Other times it means taking a day away from high-intensity exercise because the body needs restoration more than it needs another challenge. Scrolling through social media for two hours on the couch may technically be rest. It is not always recovery.
Likewise, spending an afternoon gardening, walking the dog, paddle boarding, or enjoying a meal with people you love may be profoundly restorative despite involving movement. Recovery should not simply be measured by whether we stopped working. It should be measured by whether our physiology had the opportunity to restore itself.
Research continues to demonstrate that the parasympathetic nervous system plays a central role in many of these restorative processes. Sometimes referred to as the “rest and digest” branch of the autonomic nervous system, parasympathetic activity supports digestion, nutrient absorption, tissue repair, heart rate regulation, immune balance, and healthy inflammatory resolution.³
That is one reason I often encourage patients to think beyond the question, “Did I take time off?”
A better question might be:
“Did I do anything today that actually helped my body recover?”
The answer is not always obvious.
The Hidden Cost of Always Pushing Through
One of the reasons I care so deeply about recovery is because I have watched what happens when people spend years ignoring it. Many of the patients who walk into my office are remarkably capable people. They are successful professionals. Dedicated parents. Reliable friends. People who consistently show up for everyone around them.
They know how to work hard. They know how to push through discomfort. They know how to meet deadlines and take care of responsibilities. These are my people. I relate very well to them.
What many of them have forgotten is how to recover. Over time, they begin noticing subtle changes. They no longer recover from workouts the way they once did. A simple cold seems to linger for weeks. Their energy never fully returns after a stressful season. Sleep becomes lighter. Brain fog becomes more frequent. The motivation they once relied upon feels increasingly difficult to access.
Rarely do these changes appear overnight. More often, they accumulate quietly until one day someone tells me, “I just don’t feel like myself anymore.” I find those conversations incredibly important because they remind me that health is rarely lost in one dramatic moment. It is more often eroded through thousands of small opportunities for recovery that never happened.
The encouraging part is that physiology is remarkably adaptable. The same body that slowly accumulated that physiological debt often begins moving back toward health when we consistently create opportunities for repair. That doesn’t usually happen because of one perfect weekend or one exceptional vacation. It happens because recovery becomes part of the rhythm of everyday life rather than something we hope to fit in once everything else is finished.
Supporting the Body Before It Needs You
One of my favorite things about practicing naturopathic medicine is that it allows us to think proactively instead of reactively.
Many people don’t begin thinking about their immune system until they develop a sore throat, wake up congested, or realize someone in their household has come down with a virus. By that point, the immune system is already actively responding. While there are certainly ways we can support the body during acute illness, some of our most meaningful work happens long before those first symptoms ever appear.
I often compare immune resilience to preparing for a long hike in the mountains. You don’t wait until you’re halfway up the trail to begin training. You don’t buy hiking boots after you’ve reached the summit. The preparation happens beforehand so that when your body encounters the challenge, it has the strength, endurance, and reserve to respond appropriately.
The immune system works in much the same way. Every nutritious meal, every restorative night’s sleep, every strength training session, every walk outside, and every period of meaningful recovery contributes to the body’s ability to adapt when challenges eventually arise. Supplements can become part of that preparation, but I rarely think of them as replacing the work that healthy physiology is already designed to do. Instead, I see them as helping fill nutritional gaps, supporting specific biochemical pathways, or providing additional resources when demands exceed what the body can easily manage on its own.
This perspective changes the conversation from “How do I avoid getting sick?” to “How do I become more resilient regardless of what life brings?” That is a much more empowering question.
Not Every Supplement Has the Same Job
One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is the idea that there is such a thing as an “immune supplement.” Patients often assume that if a product is labeled for immune health, it must strengthen every aspect of immune function. In reality, the immune system is incredibly complex, and different nutrients and botanical medicines support different components of that system.
Some nutrients help immune cells communicate more effectively. Others support antioxidant defenses that protect tissues while the immune system is working. Some influence inflammatory signaling, while others help maintain the integrity of barriers such as the skin, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal lining that serve as our first line of defense against the outside world.
Understanding those differences helps explain why personalized treatment plans are so important. Two people may both say they want to “support their immune system,” but one may be preparing for frequent travel, another may be recovering from repeated infections, while someone else may be dealing with chronic inflammatory symptoms or histamine intolerance. The physiology behind those situations is very different, which means the therapeutic approach should be different as well.
One of my goals as a doctor is not simply to recommend supplements. It is to help patients understand why those recommendations make sense for their individual situation.
Vitamin D: More Than a Bone Nutrient
If I had to choose one nutrient that deserves far more attention in conversations about immune health, vitamin D would be near the top of the list.
Many people still think of vitamin D primarily in terms of bone density, but research over the past two decades has shown that vitamin D receptors are present on many immune cells, including T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. Rather than acting like an on-off switch, vitamin D helps regulate immune responses, encouraging appropriate defense while also helping limit unnecessary or excessive inflammatory activity.¹
One of the reasons I appreciate vitamin D so much is that it reinforces a theme we’ve discussed throughout this month. The healthiest immune systems are not necessarily the most aggressive. They are the best regulated. Vitamin D appears to play an important role in that regulation.
Because deficiency is relatively common, particularly in northern climates and during the winter months, I often recommend laboratory testing rather than guessing. The amount someone needs to maintain healthy vitamin D status may be very different from the amount required to correct a deficiency. That distinction matters because supplementation should be individualized whenever possible.
Medicinal Mushrooms: Educating Rather Than Stimulating
Another group of supplements I frequently incorporate into clinical practice is medicinal mushrooms. Turkey tail, reishi, maitake, shiitake, and several other species have been studied extensively for their beta-glucan content. These naturally occurring polysaccharides interact with receptors on innate immune cells, influencing immune surveillance and communication in ways that appear to support healthy immune regulation.²
One of the reasons I enjoy teaching about medicinal mushrooms is because they challenge another common misconception. People often tell me they want to “boost” their immune system. I usually respond by saying that I don’t necessarily want an immune system that is working harder. I want one that is working smarter.
A hyperactive immune system can contribute to allergies, chronic inflammation, or autoimmune disease. An underactive immune system may struggle to respond appropriately to infections. The goal is balance.
Medicinal mushrooms are interesting because they appear to support that balance rather than simply forcing the immune system into a heightened state of activity. I often describe them as helping educate the immune system instead of merely stimulating it.
Why Antioxidants Deserve More Attention
One category of supplements that I think deserves much more recognition is polyphenol-rich antioxidants. When most people think of antioxidants, vitamin C usually comes to mind. While vitamin C is certainly important, it represents only one piece of a much larger antioxidant network.
Every day, normal metabolism generates reactive oxygen species, often referred to as free radicals. Exercise increases them. Air pollution increases them. Psychological stress influences oxidative stress. Travel, infections, ultraviolet light, and even healthy immune responses contribute to their production.³
Contrary to popular belief, free radicals are not inherently harmful. In appropriate amounts they play important roles in immune signaling, tissue repair, and cellular communication. Problems arise when their production consistently exceeds the body’s ability to neutralize them.
This is where dietary polyphenols become particularly interesting. Deeply pigmented fruits and berries contain anthocyanins, flavonoids, and numerous other phytochemicals that help support endogenous antioxidant systems while also influencing inflammatory signaling pathways. Rather than acting as isolated chemicals, these compounds function within an intricate network that helps cells maintain balance under conditions of increased physiological demand.⁴
One of the reasons I frequently recommend anthocyanin-rich fruit concentrates is that they provide a convenient way for patients to consistently increase their intake of these protective plant compounds, particularly during busy seasons when fresh produce intake is less than ideal. I still encourage people to eat the rainbow whenever possible because whole foods remain the foundation, but concentrated polyphenols can be an excellent complement for individuals looking to support recovery, healthy aging, and immune resilience.
Acute Support Requires a Different Strategy
One of the questions I hear most often each winter is, “Should I take the same supplements every day that I take when I’m sick?” Usually, the answer is no. This is an important distinction that is often overlooked.
The goals of preventive care and acute care are different. During everyday life, I am primarily interested in supporting healthy immune regulation, reducing unnecessary oxidative stress, and helping patients build physiological reserve.
Once someone develops an acute viral illness, however, my priorities shift toward supporting the body’s active immune response, maintaining hydration, replacing nutrients that may be consumed more rapidly during illness, and helping patients recover as efficiently as possible.
That is one reason the dose of a nutrient like vitamin C or zinc may differ substantially between routine maintenance and short-term therapeutic use. The physiology has changed, so the strategy changes with it.
It is also why I encourage patients to resist the temptation to self-prescribe increasingly large amounts of supplements simply because they seem “natural.” Appropriate dosing, timing, medication interactions, and individual medical history all deserve thoughtful consideration.
Sometimes the most effective intervention during an acute illness is not another supplement at all. Sometimes it is canceling the meeting, drinking another glass of water, eating a nourishing meal even if your appetite is diminished, and allowing yourself the sleep your immune system has been asking for.
Supporting Inflammation Is Not the Same as Suppressing It
Throughout this month we’ve spent a great deal of time talking about inflammation, and I think it is worth revisiting one final time because it changes the way we think about many of the supplements commonly marketed as “anti-inflammatory.”
When patients hear that phrase, it is easy to assume every anti-inflammatory supplement works in the same way. In reality, they often influence completely different biochemical pathways and are selected for very different clinical reasons.
One of the things I enjoy most about medicine is that the deeper you look, the more elegant physiology becomes.
Take curcumin, for example. Curcumin, the primary active compound in turmeric, has been extensively studied for its ability to influence inflammatory signaling pathways such as nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase (COX), and various inflammatory cytokines. These pathways help coordinate the production of inflammatory molecules throughout the body. Curcumin does not simply “turn inflammation off.” Instead, it helps support healthy regulation of these signaling systems while also contributing antioxidant activity that protects tissues during periods of physiological stress.¹
Boswellia works differently. Rather than primarily influencing the same pathways as curcumin, Boswellia has been shown to affect the 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) pathway and leukotriene production, making it particularly useful in situations where leukotriene-driven inflammation plays a larger role, such as certain joint, respiratory, and inflammatory conditions.²
Bromelain represents yet another unique tool. As a proteolytic enzyme derived from pineapple, bromelain has been studied for its ability to support tissue recovery, reduce swelling, and assist the body’s natural healing process following injury or surgery. It is one of the supplements I frequently think about when someone is dealing with soft tissue inflammation, sinus congestion, or post-operative recovery because its role is less about changing immune regulation and more about supporting tissue repair and healthy resolution.³
Then there is quercetin, one of my favorite examples of why understanding physiology matters. Many people think of quercetin simply as another antioxidant. While it certainly possesses antioxidant properties, one of its most interesting characteristics is its ability to help stabilize mast cells.
Mast cells are specialized immune cells found throughout the skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and connective tissues. They serve as sentinels, constantly monitoring the environment for potential threats. When appropriately activated, they release histamine and many other chemical mediators that help coordinate an immune response.
The challenge arises when mast cells become overly reactive. Instead of responding only to meaningful threats, they may begin reacting to foods, environmental exposures, temperature changes, fragrances, stress, or other triggers that should not require such an aggressive response. In these situations, patients may experience symptoms such as flushing, itching, hives, sinus congestion, headaches, digestive discomfort, or a variety of seemingly unrelated complaints.
Quercetin is particularly interesting because it helps stabilize the mast cell membrane, making these cells less likely to release histamine inappropriately. That is a very different therapeutic goal than simply reducing inflammation after it has already occurred.
I often explain this to patients by using the analogy of a smoke alarm. Some supplements help clean up the smoke after the alarm goes off. Others help prevent an overly sensitive alarm from sounding every time someone makes toast. Neither approach is inherently better. They simply solve different problems. Understanding those differences is one of the reasons individualized medicine is so important.
The Best Treatment Plan Is the One You Can Actually Live
One of the greatest lessons my patients have taught me over the years has very little to do with laboratory testing or supplements. It has to do with consistency.
Early in my career, I sometimes believed that a more detailed treatment plan was a better treatment plan. If a patient was struggling with multiple concerns, it seemed logical to address every imbalance simultaneously with comprehensive dietary changes, numerous supplements, lifestyle recommendations, and additional testing.
What I eventually realized was that even the most thoughtfully designed plan has very little value if it feels so overwhelming that it never becomes part of someone’s daily life. Today, I spend much more time asking questions like:
“What changes feel realistic for you right now?”
“What obstacles do you anticipate?”
“Which recommendation will have the biggest impact if we focus on it first?”
Medicine should fit into people’s lives. People should not have to reorganize their entire lives to fit medicine. Sometimes that means beginning with sleep before introducing five different supplements. Or maybe it means focusing on protein intake before asking someone to completely overhaul their diet. Or it could mean addressing stress and recovery before pursuing another round of advanced laboratory testing.
Healing is rarely limited by our ability to create another protocol. More often, it is limited by our ability to consistently implement the one we already have. As healthcare providers, we have a responsibility to meet patients where they are, not where we wish they were.
Likewise, patients deserve treatment plans that feel achievable, sustainable, and flexible enough to evolve as life changes. That partnership is where the best medicine happens.
Building a Body That Is Ready for Life
When people hear the phrase “immune health,” they often picture avoiding illness. While that is certainly one aspect of immune function, I think resilience is a much broader concept. A resilient body is not one that never encounters stress.
It is one that adapts well when stress inevitably arrives, recovers from exercise, heals after surgery, responds appropriately to infection, tolerates travel more effectively, adjusts to changing seasons, withstands periods of emotional stress without remaining stuck in survival mode. Whew – that’s a lot!
It learns. It repairs. It adapts. That is the remarkable intelligence of human physiology!
One of the reasons I love practicing naturopathic medicine is because it continually reminds me that the body is rarely asking us to fight against it. Far more often, it is asking us to support it. Sometimes that support comes through a carefully selected botanical medicine. Sometimes it comes from correcting a nutrient deficiency. Sometimes it comes from helping someone sleep through the night for the first time in years. Sometimes it comes from finally making time for strength training, eating enough protein, walking outside each morning, or giving themselves permission to recover after a demanding season.
All of those interventions matter because they improve the environment in which the body is trying to heal.
A Final Thought
If there is one message I hope you carry with you from this entire month’s series, it is this:
Your body is remarkably intelligent.
Every day it is making thousands of decisions that you never have to think about. It is identifying viruses, repairing tissues, producing hormones, balancing blood sugar, clearing damaged cells, adapting to stress, regulating inflammation, and protecting you from countless challenges you never even notice.
Most of the time, your body is not working against you. It is working incredibly hard for you.
Our role as doctors is to help identify what is getting in its way. We investigate, educate, interpret laboratory testing, recommend treatments, and personalize care based on your unique physiology and health goals. Your role is equally important. You provide the building materials. You create the environment. You make the daily decisions that become habits, and those habits become biology.
That responsibility is not something to fear. It is something to celebrate. It means you have far more influence over your health than you may have been led to believe.
Health is rarely built through one extraordinary intervention. It is built through hundreds of ordinary decisions repeated consistently enough that the body finally has the opportunity to do what it was designed to do all along.
As we move into next month, we’ll shift our attention to one of the most fascinating systems in the body: the gastrointestinal tract. Throughout this month’s discussions, you’ve probably noticed that digestion, nutrition, inflammation, immunity, and recovery have all quietly pointed us in the same direction. That isn’t a coincidence. The gut plays a central role in nearly every conversation we’ve had, and it deserves an entire month of its own.

You don’t have to fight your body to become healthier. More often than not, you simply need to give it what it has been asking for all along.
